Summer Academic Achievement

Studies show that success starts and continues in the home. It is crucial to continue this success during the school year through the summer months. Implement strategies for closing educational gaps at home, impacting student achievement. Ensure you and your family are set up for academic success by incorporating the following

  1. Enhance individual and family relationships
  2. Demonstrate academic improvement with increased parent/family involvement and community engagement

American Education Research Journal, 2020: School’s Out: The Role of Summers in Understanding Achievement Disparities

  • Followed students in grades 1 – 6 over five summers
  • Shows over half of students lost an average of 39% of their total school year gains during the summer months.
  • Used data from Northwest Evaluation Association
    •  included 200 million test scores for 18 million students in 7,500 school districts.
  • Also identifies potential factors further widening the gapi n resources like
    • family income,
    • parental time availability
    • parenting skill and expectations
  • Prior research indicates race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status impacts summer learning, but it only accounts for 4% of the variance in summer learning rates.
  • Efforts to address the issue have included experiments with longer school years and summer bridge programs, though more research is needed to determine their effectiveness.
Together we can connect with our community, in this unprecedented time by providing families guidance through increasing education and parenting skills at home and school. Generating Learning Opportunities is a valuable resource they can trust and keep for generations
